Away With You Lassie

from Bare Foot Folk by Ange Hardy

/

about

After loosing a lover to the sea, this is a tale of the conflict between moving on with life, or clinging on to false hope. One of the first folk songs I ever wrote.

lyrics

Young Nancie had high hopes oh she'd many a dream
she wanted to travel oh for little had she seen
she'd money a plenty and youth she'd enough
but she would not leave here without her true love

away with you lassie oh away will you go
away with you lassie oh for he'll not come home

She waits by the harbour of Babbacombe ol' bay
and she waits for the ol' boat to take her away
she waits for her young man to carry her on
and play for her gently oh the sweetest of songs

away with you lassie oh away will you go
away with you lassie oh for he'll not come home

she waits on his father to bring home his son
to lend her the hand that she 'd been waiting on
she waits for him one day to take her to sea
but many a year it has come and has been

away with you lassie oh away will you go
away with you lassie oh for he'll not come home
away with you lassie oh away will you go
away with you lassie oh for he'll not come home
