While flyer dropping for a tour in November 2014 I saw a lone holly tree near the tiny village of Chumleigh in Somerset which soon became the chorus of this song. I envisioned a lost robin seeking shelter from the storm on Christmas Eve, guided safely to sanctuary in the branches through the growing clouds, cold snow and failing light.
lyrics
Out in the wood, where the mother tree stood tall, called sweetly the little robin for a shelter from snow, called sweetly the little robin for a shelter from snow: “Oh tell me dearest mother tree, where shall I go?”
“The Holly Tree” said she, “with the greenest of leaves and the reddest of berries, the little holly tree, the little holly tree with the greenest of leaves and the reddest of berries, the little holly tree.” And up in the sky, where the heavy clouds they grow, called sweetly the little robin for a shelter from snow, called sweetly the little robin for a shelter from snow: “Oh tell me dearest mother tree, where shall I go?
“The Holly Tree” said she, “with the greenest of leaves and reddest of berries, the little holly tree, the little holly tree with the greenest of leaves and the reddest of berries, the little holly tree.”
On a white Christmas Eve, in the suns final glow, called sweetly the little robin for a shelter from snow, called sweetly the little robin for a shelter from snow: “Oh tell me dearest mother tree, where shall I go?”
“The Holly Tree” said she, “with the greenest of leaves and the reddest of berries, the little holly tree, the little holly tree with the greenest of leaves and the reddest of berries, the little holly tree.”
