True love it will wait by
the well of the town and cry

I sat down by the well in town
where the land meets with the sky
where when all had gone by the setting sun
young martha would come to cry
shed wait in land for her husbands hand
shed waited seven years
when he'd not home she'd cry alone
and the well would fill with tears

Never a day had the fine young maid
the well not waited by
the towns men folk had nought but hope
one day they'd catch her eye
Hear me son, no man had won
for loyal she would be
as she would weep, and her tears would keep
the well filled up for thee

True love it will wait by
the well of the town and cry

Twas rumoured wide that girl had cried
the tears of a thousand young
when her heart it broke and made her choke
no more by the well shed come
I sat down by the well in town
my story there to tell
in Marthas words carved round the girth
of the stone on the drinking well

My husband john, I have waited long
and still I wait above
now when it rains tell our son James
I wait for the ones I love
so you'll come by where the well runs dry
and mother waits no more
I'll tell you son why the waters gone
and the clouds above you pour
